Baby Woolly Mammoth Jaw - Mammuthus sp. - Pleistocene - Eastern Siberia, Russia
Lot No: 1112. Closely related to today’s Asian elephant, the now-extinct Woolly Mammoth was an herbivore, living on the tundras of Asia, Europe and North America from the Pleistocene to the early Holocene. The present jaw specimen displays teeth exhibiting the pristine condition to be expected in a well-preserved juvenile. An unusual specimen due to its very small size, the well-defined tooth ridges, or laminae, illustrate the mammoth’s well-evolved adaptation for crushing food. Jaw measures 14 x 10 x 8in; Teeth measure 3 1/4in Estimate: $1,200 - 1,500
