A KINGFISHER FEATHER JEWEL-ENCRUSTED COURT HEADDRESS, DIAN ZI - LATE 19TH CENTURY
The oval flat-crowned headdress with a semi-circular section sweeping towards the forehead, the wired black ribbon frame elaborately applied with shaped metal filigree phoenix covered with kingfisher feathers and pigments, with a band of similarly covered shou characters and bats on geometric grounds to the rim. 11¾ in. (30 cm.) wide - Estimate: £2,000 - £3,000 ($3,954 - $5,931)
Note: Two examples of headdresses of this type are in the Palace Museum, Beijing, exhibited Jewellery and Accessories of The Royal Consorts of Ching Dynasty, Beijing, 1992, nos. 3 and 4. Compare a similar example, circa 1880, illustrated by L. Wrigglesworth, The Accessory, London, 1991, p. 7. Another is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated by Stephen W. Bushell, Chinese Art, London, 1924, vol. II, fig. 108. Similar headdresses were sold in our New York Rooms, 26 March 2003, lot 76, and 21 March 2000, lot 77.

A CORAL AND LAPIS LAZULI COURT NECKLACE, CHAO ZHU - 19TH CENTURY
Composed of one hundred and eight coral beads spaced by four slightly larger lapis lazuli jiezhu, 'connecting beads', the central jiezhu connected to a gourd shaped fotou, 'Buddha head', suspending the beiyun, 'back cloud', composing of a yellow ribbon divided by the oval jiepai, 'connecting plaque', and weighed down by a dew-shaped zhuijiao, 'suspending ends', the necklace is further enhanced by three strings of jinian, 'reminder', each composing of ten lapis beads and weighed down by dew-shaped blue, pink and green tourmaline pendants. Estimate: £6,000 - £8,000 ($11,862 - $15,816
Note: The court necklace, chaozhu, was an integral element of Qing official dress. Linked to the Buddhist rosary, the necklace was composed of 108 beads in four sections of 27, separated by larger 'Buddha's head' beads, and hung with three strings and tape which hung down the back.

The first an archaistic hu vase of flattened pear shape, flanked by a pair of tubular handles, carved in relief with a dragon coiled around the sides pursuing the flaming pearl, framed by key-fret borders, with two taotie masks and overlapping lotus petal panels above the short spreading foot, 17cm (6¾in) high; the second a five-lobed melon shaped vase, issuing from a gnarled foliate branch, matched stopper. 10.5cm (4in) high. The Immortal, possibly Zhongli Quan, standing with arms stretched down covered by the long flowing robes tied at the waist and billowing in the wind, the robes incised with crane roundels amidst cloud scrolls and floral patterns below the collar with a wave pattern, the bearded face with a gentle smiling expression under a high forehead and combed hair coiled into two knots, soapstone stand. 18.4cm (7¼in) high.
