Lot 33. A fine grey and black jade horse and foal group, 17th-18th century; 26.2cm (10 3/8in) wideEstimate HK$ 150,000-180,000. Sold for HK$ 400,000 (€ 47,786). Photo: Bonhams.

Naturalistically modelled as a recumbent horse with hind legs tucked under its body and forelegs half raised, finely detailed with an incised mane and tail which is swept to its right side, the foal climbing up and resting its head on the horse's back, the stone of a pale tone with dark brown and green inclusions, wood stand.

ProvenanceAcquired from Louis Joseph, London, 21 October 1960 (invoice dated 17 November 1960)
An English private collection and thence by descent.

NoteThe present lot is remarkable for the tender and naturalistic carving of the horse and foal, with the adult horse carved with its head raised in a protective poise over the playful young foal. The craftsman cleverly utilised the russet and greenish sections of the stone to denote the horses' hide adding a further visual dimension to the lively group
