NOTE: Arnold Boonen was apprenticed in 1683 to the portrait and genre painter, Godfried Schalcken, working with him in Dordrecht for six years. Technically a highly accomplished artist he succeeded Nicolaes Maes as the most fashionable painter in Amsterdam. In his genre paintings, which are in the tradition of the 'Fine' Leiden painters and date for the most part from before 1700, he frequently employed the candlelight effects that his master, Schalcken, made so fashionable.
